Alonso requests sanction for Leclerc: "We have a fourth position"

After a qualifying in which Fernando Alonso got a good result but was left wanting more, the Spanish driver’s objective for the 2022 British GP race was to gain a few positions from seventh place and finally it was.

At the start, the Spaniard gained two positions and placed fifth, but the race was suspended before reaching the end of the first sector after a very shocking multiple accident, and that meant that at the restart, almost an hour later, everyone returned to start from their qualifying positions.

In this second start, Alonso started seventh, lost a position with Pierre Gasly and fell to eighth place, but on the sixth lap he regained that position and, after problems with Max Verstappen, moved up another position.

On lap 34, the man from Oviedo pitted to ride harder and fell to sixth position, as Sergio Pérez climbed up several places and moved ahead of Lando Norris. A few laps later, Alonso once again entered the pitlane to fit new softs, with the Safety Car on the track caused by Esteban Ocon and he won the position from the British McLaren, placing fifth.

In the last laps the Asturian from Alpine got into a fight with Charles Leclerc, who was wearing very old hard tyres, but could not overtake him and ended up closing the top 5, 1,025 seconds behind the Monegasque Ferrari driver.

As soon as he got out of his car, the #14 surprised everyone by assuring that he had finished in “fourth position”, as he expected a penalty for Charles Leclerc for moving several times under braking in the final moments of the session.

“At the end of the race Leclerc moved three times on the straight defending against Hamilton , I moved once in Canada and they gave me five seconds, so I guess we have a fourth position today, which tastes very good.

“After seeing those three changes of direction, I knew they were going to be five seconds… And if they weren’t, it would be like a movie, so as I say, I was trying to finish the race and have a very good weekend,” Alonso said. .

Taking a closer look at his race, the Alpine driver was genuinely happy with the pace of his A522 throughout the weekend at Silverstone.

“Today I think it was the best race of the whole year in terms of competitiveness.”

“At the start we did quite well, but then unfortunately they repositioned us again and everyone who started behind us disappeared, so everyone gained positions except the first seven, let’s say, and still we started well again and made a good race”.

“With Checo who had a puncture or something and Max who had problems, we gained several positions, Russell’s after the accident as well, so we were already in the fight for the top 5. In the end I could have fought a little more, but I was more worried about Norris,” he concluded.
