Alonso, "sad and upset" with some conspiracies about him

Fernando Alonso was the first big chip to fall in the famous ” silly season ” when he announced his departure from Alpine and signing for Aston Martin for 2023 on the first day of the summer holidays.

This caused a reaction effect in Alpine , which announced its reserve driver, Oscar Piastri, as a substitute for the Asturian for 2023, but the young Australian quickly replied and assured that he had not signed anything, while trying to sign for McLaren, which in turn confirmed Daniel Ricciardo’s departure earlier this week.

Amid the driver market craze, a number of links were established between Alonso , his former manager Flavio Briatore and Piastri ‘s current manager, former F1 driver Mark Webber, who himself was also once represented by Briatore. .

However, the Spaniard denied that Briatore had anything to do with his move and also that Webber was aware of everything that was going to happen, stating that he found it “quite sad and annoying to read that conspiracy.”

“I made that decision, because for a few months I had been talking to the team to extend the contract and nothing was officially reached,” Alonso explained.

Aston Martin called me after Sebastian [Vettel] announced his retirement from F1. If Sebastian had continued, this probably wouldn’t have happened, the move to Aston. So these were very clear and very easy decisions on my part.”

“What happened afterwards and what is happening with Oscar, as I have already said, does not interest me at all. I am and will be completely on the sidelines,” he added.

Flavio Briatore

Alonso added that Briatore was not part “of any of the negotiations” and that he was the one who had done everything, as always.

“Flavio has come to some races,” said Alonso. “But as you may know, he has other dealings with Stefano [Domenicali], Formula 1, the paddock club and other things, but not related to me.

Formula 1’s Contract Recognition Board is due to make a decision on Piastri ‘s situation next Monday, which will directly affect Alpine and McLaren ‘s plans for next season.

The Spaniard was “surprised” by Piastri’s situation, and assured that the young Australian was “an incredible talent for any team.” In addition, he took the opportunity to wish both Piastri and Alpine the best for the future.

“It will continue to be my team this year, but it will be my team forever in my heart, because we have achieved things that were unthinkable when we started the relationship.”

“I came back to Formula 1 also thanks to Alpine. I only wish the best for them,” Alonso concluded.
