Fernando Alonso led the morning FP3 in Canada, in the rain, and showed that he continues to be masterful in a difficult qualifying, coming second in both Q1 and Q2.
In Q3, Alonso was third after the first attempt with intermediates, only surpassed by an unbeatable Max Verstappen and by Sainz , but in his last attempt he improved his mark to finish second, an incredible starting position taking advantage of the crazy conditions of the rain .
For his part, Sainz appeared to be in contention for pole position, but a poor third sector ruined his final lap, and he will have to start from the second row of the grid, third as the lead Ferrari. Thus, Verstappen took his second pole position of the 2022 season with a blistering 1:21.299 that left all his rivals more than six tenths behind.
George Russell was the only one who took the risk in the end on dry tyres, but he went off the track in which he broke his rear wing, which proved to be a failed bet. That allowed Lewis Hamilton to be the team’s top finisher, fourth, ahead of a surprising Haas, with Magnussen 5th and Mick 6th.
Q3 only had a Ferrari and a Red Bull . Carlos Sainz Jr. was the only representative of the Cavallino since Leclerc, who has a sanction and will start on the last row of the grid for changing the engine, only participated in Q1. For his part, Sergio Pérez suffered a run off the track at the start of Q2 in turn 3 and will have to come back on Sunday (he qualified 13th thanks to a breakdown of Norris in the McLaren F1 that prevented him from doing a single lap in Q2) .
It was a very difficult session from the start, starting with a very wet track and extreme wet tyres. There, in Q1, Pierre Gasly and Sebastian Vettel fell, who had been second and third in the morning in the third free practice session. This causes that, together with Leclerc and Pérez, there will be several drivers out of their theoretical place, having to gain position from, for example, the two Haas (of Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher) who will take over the third row or a euphoric Guanyu Zhou, also in the top 10.

Canadian GP 2022 F1 Qualifying Q1 Recap
The rainy conditions, which are often accompanied by incidents, meant that almost everyone rushed out onto the track as soon as Q1 started, on extreme wet tyres. It was probably the busiest round of the season, as a red flag could come at any moment and stop the session.
After the first lap of the favourites, Russell was in pole position with Alonso second, but on lap two Verstappen dropped to 1m35.830s to take the lead. Alonso set a record for the first two sectors but aborted when he encountered poor visibility in the third. Instantly, Sainz beat Verstappen’s mark by 18 thousandths but, on a track that was slowly improving, Russell reclaimed the top spot. Norris, Mick Schumacher and Checo Pérez each had excursions through the loopholes, although without major problems.
A drier lane was forming on the track, and Magnussen and Bottas had their moment of glory in the lead. Alonso was also first for an instant, before Sainz overtook him to leave a momentary Spanish double.
The table changed again and again, and with three minutes to go, Pérez was 16th, temporarily eliminated. He improved to 13th, while Verstappen moved into first place. Sainz went off the track on the last lap, causing a yellow flag in the first sector. Alonso, despite a skid in the last corners, rose to second place, and neither Gasly nor Vettel, who had been second and third in FP3, managed to qualify.
In addition to the two of them, their teammates Lance Stroll and Yui Tsunoda, and Nicholas Latifi also fell in Q1.

F1 Canadian GP 2022 Qualifying Q2 Recap
Before starting Q2 there was already one eliminated. Charles Leclerc, with a penalty that forced him to start penultimate (only ahead of Yuki Tsunoda), got out of the car and greeted the public from the pitlane, saying goodbye until Sunday.
The second round also started in a very active way, with a traffic jam at the end of the pitlane while the light was still red, and more than half of the grid already on intermediate tyres. Alonso took the lead on his first attempt with intermediates, just before Alexander Albon crashed out of Turn 5 and ended up against the wall.
However, the biggest problem was for Checo Pérez, who went off at turn 3, and got stuck in the protections, causing a red flag. They gave him instructions on the radio to get out of there, but it was impossible, and the Mexican was left out of the session.
The clock kept running in the first moments of the red flag and went down to eight minutes, although they later corrected it and left it at nine. That was left when the session resumed, and Alonso was first at that point.
The track had dried out quite a bit and everyone went out with intermissions, which caused the table to change over and over again. Verstappen settled into first place, while Russell, Sainz, Magnussen and Alonso also shone.
The Asturian was first in his last step through the finish line, but they all still had to go. However, only Verstappen surpassed him, and the two Spaniards went on, second and fourth, to Q3. Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas, Alexander Albon, the injured Pérez and two drivers who did not set time, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc, fell in that round.
