The president and CEO of Renault, Luca De Meo had to accept Fernando Alonso’s decision to leave Alpine to go to Aston Martin from the next 2023 Formula 1 season, despite the fact that they wanted to retain the Asturian for one more year .

The two-time world champion signed a new contract with the Silverstone team on August 1, a date on which the Gauls could do nothing to secure Oscar Piastri as his substitute and teammate for Esteban Ocon. In this way, at Enstone they went from having a guaranteed pilot almost renewed to not even having the young star in the making that they had in their academy.

In addition to the management mistakes made by the team boss at the Grand Circus, Otmar Szafnauer , and the head of the Alpine project, Laurent Rossi , there was a lack of internal communication, and that was the result of nobody knowing about the marches of both drivers to Aston Martin and presumably McLaren.

At Enstone they tried to keep Fernando Alonso happy to secure his renewal, offering the 41-year-old a one-year deal. However, the two-time champion wanted at least two seasons, which he would get at Aston Martin, as well as a larger sum of money.

That was not all in Alpine, and there is a story that has come to light with which the French wanted to conquer Fernando Alonso. The Dieppe manufacturer had among its plans to create a special edition of its star street sports car, the A110 .

Initially, the French firm wanted to reveal the limited version of the car on October 9 at the Japanese Grand Prix, even the Renault Group was willing to offer the Spanish an important recognition in the sporting field, a sign that the talks about his Renovation were more advanced than it seemed.

The Italian Grand Prix at Monza was going to be the date to present the ‘A110 Alonso’, on the occasion of the test’s centenary, but it was postponed for a month to do it in the country of the Rising Sun. However, this vehicle, which is around 60,000 euros in its basic version, will never become a reality after the departure of the man from Oviedo to Aston Martin.

Who knows if the Spaniard will captivate the directors of the British brand to create a special Vantage and recreate Agent 007 himself…
