AlphaTauri believes that "some team can find a special solution"

With completely new technical rules for this season, the FIA hopes that the cars will be better able to compete against each other. Due to the modifications, the cars will generate less downforce, leaning more towards the ground effect concept.

However, Franz Tost has doubts that the problems of dirty air that annoy the cars that follow others will end completely.

Based on his data, the AlphaTauri man believes that, in high-speed corners, drivers will still find it difficult to stay close to other single-seaters.

“I think that in the low and medium speed corners, they will be able to run closer,” he said after the presentation of the AlphaTauri AT03.

“I have some doubts with the high-speed ones, because with these wider cars and such big tyres, you always create some dirty air behind them. So I’m not sure it’s easier to follow others.

Beyond the new technical rules, it is hoped that the arrival of a stricter cost limit, together with aerodynamic restrictions, could help even out the grid.

AlphaTauri technical director Jody Egginton is hopeful that there will be fewer gaps between all the teams on the grid in 2022, although he is aware that an entirely new set of rules also means one team could find a performance advantage.

“Although everything is quite restricted by the new regulations, it is possible that some team has found a very special solution and therefore has a performance advantage.

“It is not easy to guess where the other teams will be, because everything is very new, from the mechanical side to the aerodynamic side, but personally I hope that they will all be more evenly matched.”

“Realistically, we will only have an idea of the performance of our AT03 after the first pre-season tests, although we will surely have to wait two or three races to get a much clearer picture.”

Egginton also suggests that the first few races of the season could end in a major design convergence, as many teams start to copy the solutions that others have implemented more successfully.

“Since the change in the aerodynamic rules is very big, there is obviously a lot of room to experiment and look for new aerodynamic concepts,” he explained.

“But at the same time, the new regulations also increase the risk of choosing the wrong development path.”

“I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of room for teams to come up with solutions that are aerodynamically innovative. But at the same time I hope that the hidden details of the development will contribute significantly to what the teams can achieve in this regard.”

“I am convinced that the teams will appear in the first test with a wide variety of interpretations and this will provoke discussions and investigations on the possible directions to follow,” concluded the AlphaTauri .
