Amoxicillin allergy: symptoms and what to do in case of reaction

Amoxicillin is a type of antibiotic that belongs to the penicillin family , that is, being a bactericide, it is capable of destroying microbes. Therefore, this compound is used to treat many infections caused by germs that are sensitive to this antibiotic itself.

Among the infections that the antibiotic usually heals and treats, we find pneumonia, bronchitis, or infections that travel to the ears, nose, throat or the skin of the urinary tract.

Sometimes many organisms are not prepared to resist certain medications or treatments, so the body responds to these attacks by causing allergies to certain types of compounds. When we have an amoxicillin allergy attack, the severity and symptoms will determine how to treat this reaction.

Symptoms of amoxicillin allergy

Being a drug that comes from the penicillin compound, the symptoms in many people are common or the same as when they have an allergy to the penicillin compound. The most common are usually hives, rashes or mild inflammation on the lips. Although it can go to more and reach anaphylaxis.

In these reactions we can notice difficulties in breathing normally, severe dizziness or a faster heartbeat than usual.

What should we do?

When we start to have some of these symptoms, the immediate thing is to stop taking amoxicillin . For now we will not make the inflammation more acute and the allergy could subside. Then, once we notice these symptoms associated with the medicine, we must consult with our doctor as quickly as possible.

The doctor will assess the reaction and could change the medication to see how our own body reacts to this change derived from an allergy to amoxicillin.

Normally, mild allergies, such as rashes or hives, will be treated with antihistamines , although we must always be sure that it is our doctor who tells us to take these medications.

Baths in cold water can help to subside the reactions of our skin, as well as other topical antihistamines that will calm the rashes.

As long as the reaction is not severe, this should be enough to lower the allergy to amoxicillin. If the allergy does not subside, and we suffer an anaphylactic reaction, it is best to contact the emergency services of our town. They will indicate the appropriate process, which is usually remitted with an injection of epinephrine to stop the reaction in its tracks.
