About the Thunderbirds
The Thunderbirds are the US Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron assigned to the 57th Wing and are based at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Created in 1953, the USAF Thunderbirds are the third oldest formal flying aerobatic team (under the same name) in the world. The Thunderbirds Squadron travels the United States performing acrobatic training and flying solo in specially marked aircraft. Officers serve a two-year mission with the squad, while enlisted personnel serve three to four years. In addition to their aerial demonstration responsibilities, the Thunderbirds are part of the USAF fighting force and, if necessary, can be quickly integrated into an operational combat unit.
