If we refer to the IQ tests , it is true that many children who are breastfed have better results than those who are bottle-fed. According to a study carried out by researchers at King's College London, this is explained by a variant of the FADS2 gene – which makes an enzyme involved in the metabolism of fatty acids – present in 90% of people. 3,200 infants participated in the experiment and, indeed, those breastfed who had the aforementioned genetic variant had an IQ between six and seven points higher.
This is by no means the only argument in favor of breastfeeding. The Spanish Association of Pediatrics indicates that it is the best diet that a child can have during the first six months of life. In addition to the psycho-affective and nutritional benefits it provides, breast milk immunizes the infant against various infections and protects him from future illnesses such as obesity, diabetes or cardiovascular diseases.
