White sharks, Carcharodon carcharias , are not only among the largest predators in the oceans (their diet includes everything from tunas to sea lions and even dolphins), but they are also capable of migrating thousands of kilometers . Until just over a decade ago, scientists thought that, in general, this shark spent most of its life relatively close to the coast, where it easily found food. However, as early as 2002, a team of marine science experts from different US institutions revealed in Nature that they had observed how a male white shark had traveled from California to the waters of Hawaii. Three years later, another group of North American and South African experts, who had managed to place a tracking device on a female specimen, found that it had crossed the Indian Ocean, from South Africa to Australia, and had returned (it had traveled more than 20,000 km) in just nine months.
