Aston Martin doubts whether Alonso "underestimates" Stroll in F1

The Aston Martin team announced the signing of Fernando Alonso from the 2023 season after Sebastian Vettel confirmed his withdrawal from the highest category of motorsport. Since then, there has been a lot of talk about what this union between the Asturian and the Silverstone team will be like, since some doubt if it is the ideal option for the two-time world champion.

When he lands in the British team, he will meet the son of the owner, a Lance Stroll motivated by being able to beat a Formula 1 legend with the same car, and from within the team they are aware that they must provide a competitive car to their duo of pilots.

Aston Martin boss Mike Krack explained to the championship website that the Canadian had never enjoyed a fast machine capable of winning in motorsport’s top flight, and also discussed the relationship the two starters could have.

“It’s important to remember that Lance [Stroll] has never really had a winning car in Formula 1, a single-seater where he can show what he’s capable of, to really unleash his talent.” Silverstone.

“When Sebastian [Vettel] joined the team, people were saying that Lance had no chance [of winning], but he has performed incredibly well against a four-time world champion, they have been very evenly matched,” Krack continued. “People are saying the same thing now that Fernando [Alonso] joins the team, but let’s wait and see. Lance could surprise some.”

With surprises or not, Aston Martin will have to face a new course with the idea that they were one of the worst teams in the constructors’ world championship, and in the absence of a few appointments for the curtain to close, they are penultimate, distanced from Williams, the red lantern, but with a certain disadvantage compared to AlphaTauri.

With the incorporation of Alonso in 2023, they will try to move up: “I don’t know if Fernando underestimates Lance. He is not afraid of facing him in the same car, or any other driver, but there is respect between them.”

“They have known each other for many years, they have raced against each other, and Fernando knows Lance’s qualities. There is real respect,” said the Aston Martin boss.
