Bagnaia did not finish "happy" with the Australian MotoGP race

Life smiles at Pecco Bagnaia. The Italian driver leaves Phillip Island at the top of the general classification, after a brilliant comeback in the second half of the season. Although he was not able to take victory in the Australian Grand Prix, his third podium also allowed him to mark distances with Aleix Espargaró, ninth in the race.

“I’m happy for the championship, not so much for the race,” said the Ducati rider at the press conference after the podium. “Everything changed for me when I saw that Quartararo was out, so I calmed down and thought about not doing anything stupid to win the race; I’ve already made a lot of mistakes this year to add another one”.

Thus, Bagnaia decided to focus on “managing the tires”, although that did not prevent him from reaching the last laps with “the front left part” completely worn out.

The surprising thing is that it was in Australia, and not in Japan or Thailand, where Pecco took the lead from Fabio Quartararo. The Ducati has never finished going well at Phillip Island (except in the hands of Casey Stoner), and Bagnaia himself acknowledged this. “In Australia my bike was clearly faster on the straight, but on the rest of the circuit it turned less, moved a lot and was not very stable,” he said.

Now comes Malaysia; a track that adapts wonderfully to the characteristics of the Desmosedici, and where it could shelve the MotoGP title. “I’m happy for the championship, now we’re going to Malaysia, which is a good track. […] In Sepang it won’t be easy, but I think our bike there can help us more”, he commented.

The one from Turin was asked about his opinion on the situation that Quartararo is going through, but Pecco admitted that he did not have much information. “Honestly, I don’t know what his situation is. But it is clear that he is in a difficult moment, because he is competitive, but in the race he has problems.”

“In qualifying it is also harder for him to be in the top positions,” added #63. “Yamaha is having a problem in the race, I don’t know if it’s because of the tires, because their engine is slower… but I don’t know what is happening to them,” he concluded.
