Bagnaia: "I don't want to think about the championship"

Pecco Bagnaia is the fashionable man in the MotoGP world championship. The Italian driver achieved his fourth consecutive victory at the San Marino Grand Prix, with which he climbed to second place in the general classification.

Although he started from fifth position (after being penalized in FP1 for disturbing Alex Márquez), he was soon at the head of the group, and he did not let go of the lead until he saw the checkered flag . But, although it may seem that everything came to him, Pecco wanted to remember in the press conference that “it was not the easiest race”.

“At the beginning I didn’t have a lot of grip, Maverick [Viñales] had better traction and he was pushing me a lot. But lap by lap the situation was improving, and the pace of the last six laps was incredible. I think it’s the first time in my whole career that I do my fastest lap in the last lap. That shows that we are doing a fantastic job”, explained the Italian.

The first laps of the race were a real mess, with multiple crashes and scares due to the lack of grip on the track. “In the first lap I saw that it closed a lot in front of me. First Miller fell and then Enea [Bastianini] had the steering closed. I myself lost the front end. The conditions were very different from yesterday’s practice, and It was difficult for me to be fast in the first laps,” he acknowledged.

Bagnaia also wanted to reject the idea that he had the test controlled from start to finish. “I spent the whole race feeling someone on the back of my head. I tried to be smart and constant at the pace level. I haven’t made defensive lines because I think that would have given [Bastianini and Viñales] opportunities to overtake me. Being focused on doing the best lines has helped me to maintain a good rhythm”.

In fact, Bastianini almost stole his wallet , and victory was decided by 34 thousandths of a second. “In the last lap I tried to have more cornering, because I had less traction, and that’s why I went a bit wide [in the last corner]. Enea lifts the bike very well, and was able to traction better. I preferred to do a longer line to avoid losing acceleration”.

Likewise, and despite his meteoric rise in recent races, Pecco does not want to think about the general classification , where he is second, only thirty points behind ‘ El Diablo ‘. “Thirty points are still a lot. I don’t want to think about the championship,” he said.

“I prefer to be focused on the second half of the season, and do like today: if I can’t fight for victory, do my best. We are being competitive and consistent in all sessions, and I think that is the big change we have made. compared to the beginning of the season.

“I’ll start thinking about the championship when I’m five or ten points behind the leader,” the #63 added. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes thinking about the championship when I was away, so my goal is to be competitive, always be at the front and try to win. I think this way of working has been the key to change in this second half of the season. Only I want to stay focused on the work every weekend.”

Finally, Bagnaia was surprised by the discreet result of Fabio Quartararo, who crossed the finish line in fifth position. “Fabio’s pace has been very good all weekend and I was counting on him to be able to fight for the win, but sometimes having more speed can help you,” he commented.
