Phillip Island.- There is no one who has won more at this circuit than MotoGP legend Casey Stoner , the only one to have won the drivers’ title for Ducati (2007) so far, a milestone that Pecco hopes to emulate this season. Bagnaia, who with three races to go until the end of the season, is second overall, just two points behind Fabio Quartararo.
As happened at Silverstone , the Italian has spoken with Stoner, what’s more, he has walked with the former driver around the circuit to unravel the secrets of the Australian track.
“This very Thursday I have been talking to Casey a bit, it is very important to get advice from him, it is the best way to have first-hand information and take advantage of it,” explained the Ducati rider, who also acknowledged that this is a track that he likes a lot.
“It makes me happy to race here, it is a race weekend but you feel more relaxed, you are not in a hotel, you are in a house, you do things that you do not do in other places, like having to prepare breakfast in the morning, It’s an old-fashioned track and with the fast corners it’s fantastic,” he explained.
In the last race at Phillip Island , Bagnaia, who was running with Pramac, finished fourth, just 55 thousandths off the podium.
“I really wanted to be here again, it is one of my favorite circuits, both for me and for everyone. In 2019 it was a race that I really enjoyed, I think that our potential, compared to then, is very high with the new fairing and That can help us a lot,” he revealed.
In these almost three years, the differences can be great, especially due to the growth of the Ducati.
“More than the bike, I think that since 2019 I have improved a lot, the main difference is the handling of the bike, the chassis is practically the same as then, there are not many changes beyond the new fairing, which is going to help us a lot in this circuit”, in reference to the aerodynamic package.
Bagnaia , who before the Assen race was 91 points behind Quartararo , has made a clear comeback and, right now, is the big favorite to become the new world champion.
“As Fabio says, everything is even and it seems that we are starting the championship, there are five riders fighting for the title, without a doubt Fabio and I are the ones with the best chance, but Aleix Espargaró is also close, and there are Jack Miller and Enea Batianini with options. We have a good potential, we are in a good moment and we have to take advantage of it”, said the man from Turin confidently.
