Bagnaia: "I'm sorry for what happened, I'm practically a teetotaler. It was a mistake"

The Ducati rider, winner of the last race held so far, the Dutch Grand Prix, was enjoying a few days of vacation in Ibiza with some friends when he suffered an accident while driving early Tuesday morning. A taxi driver alerted the local police who showed up at the scene, proceeding with the usual protocol in these cases. Fortunately, there were no personal injuries and no other people or vehicles were involved.

Pecco Bagnaia, who tested positive for alcohol, returned to Italy on Wednesday, as originally planned, to start preparations for the second part of the season, which kicks off the first weekend of August at Silverstone.

Already from his home, Bagnaia uploaded a post to his social networks explaining what happened and asking for forgiveness.

“On leaving the club, around 3, at a roundabout I ended up with the two front wheels in a ditch without involving other vehicles or people. The blood alcohol control carried out by the Police determined that I drank more than what is allowed by Spanish law. I’m very sorry about what happened: I’m practically a teetotaler and it was a mistake I shouldn’t have made. I apologize and I assure you that I have learned my lesson. You should never get behind the wheel if you have drunk alcohol, ”he says on his Instagram account.

Bagnaia will now have to face a speedy trial in Ibiza, for which he can assign a lawyer and a solicitor, so he is not obliged to appear. After exceeding the legal and criminal limit, the runner will now face a minimum punishment of two years of license withdrawal in Spanish territory, in addition to a heavy financial fine.
