Bagnaia: "It's not enough to be fast; you have to be strong, like Quartararo"

After the first ten races of the season, Fabio Quartararo firmly leads the general classification of the MotoGP world championship with 172 points, thanks in part to the three victories added in Portimao, Barcelona and Sachsenring, these last two consecutive. The Frenchman, after the same number of races, added the same points last year, achieving his first championship title at the end of the course.

Pecco Bagnaia, the rival who, predictably, seemed the most qualified to challenge the Yamaha rider for the title, is sixth overall with only 81 points, no less than 91 behind Fabio, despite having scored two victories already this year, in Jerez and Mugello, but his multiple errors and crashes have led him to accumulate four zeros this year, the last two in a row, two races in which the leader has nailed a 50-point bite.

As in 2021, Fabio is building his championship in the first part of the season, even though the Frenchman repeats, whenever he has the chance, that he did not start the season well and that he had to do an exercise in self-control, starting in Austin, to stop complaining about the bike and focus on riding.

On the contrary, Pecco was more consistent than Fabio in the second part of last season. In 2021, after the first ten races, the Italian had 114 points and had not achieved any victory, while the Yamaha rider, with 172, had four wins. In the second part of the year, when eight races were held (this year there will be ten), Pecco reacted, achieving four victories and adding 138 points, while his rival added 106 and only won one race.

In the end Fabio was champion with 278 points and four wins, while Pecco was second with 252 and those four wins. Nobody doubts that a calendar in 2021 of 20 grand prix would have reached the last appointment with everything to decide.

This weekend the Dutch Grand Prix will be held in Assen, the eleventh race of the season and the start of the second half of the course, even though after this weekend the paddock will go on vacation for six weeks, until on August 7, when the action resumes at Silverstone.

Speaking to Bagnaia this Thursday, Motorsport.com reminded the Italian of his reaction in the second half of last year, creating a parallel with this year, in which he will have ten races to clear the 91 points that now separate them, a hunt that should start this weekend, where a new negative result would definitively condemn him.

“Undoubtedly this weekend is a very important race to finish this first part of the course and go on vacation more calmly,” admitted the Ducati rider.

“Regarding our first part of the year, we have proven to be one of the fastest, at the Sachsenring, the fastest of all last weekend. What we need is to be the strongest, and that’s different things. Fabio has shown , until now, to be the strongest, more than last year, always more constant and solid”, reflected the runner.

Pecco is shown at this point in his career, more reflective, he has put aside blaming luck, circumstances or others to make self-criticism, as he did in Germany. The Italian takes perspective and understands that something must change to fight with Quartararo.

“It is always very important to be the fastest, to start on pole, etc., but in the position we are in, the step I have to take is to improve to start being stronger, which is the difficult part. But that’s not why I’m going to stop If I try, I’m going to study how to do it to improve that aspect, be permanently ahead and be constant. I’m convinced that we can achieve it”, settled the boy from Torino.
