Mugello.- The Ducati headliner crashed with 34 minutes remaining in the third free practice of the Italian Grand Prix, returned to the box, took a deep breath and returned to the track a few minutes later to close a lap in 1.45.393, the fastest of the weekend, although still far from the best lap set last year with Fabio Quartaro’s pole (1.45.187), a record that, however, will be threatened in Q2, qualifying, as long as it doesn’t rain, as some forecasts indicate.
Behind Bagnaia, the fastest was Aleix Espargaró and his Aprilia, who are completing a dream weekend at Mugello, where Luca Marini also came out on top to finish third, just ahead of Johann Zarco, Marco Bezzecchi, Enea Bastianini and Jorge Martín, all of them with Ducati, who placed six bikes among the top seven. Precisely the last two, Enea and Jorge, suffered crashes during the session, the Spaniard 27 minutes from the end and the Italian with the clock already at zero, suffering a drag at turn 15 that he almost saved with his elbow, but finally led him to the gravel.
The top 10 fastest riders who, moreover, are qualified for Q2 directly, were completed by Pol Espargaró eighth and Honda first, Takaaki Nakagami and the World Championship leader, Fabio Quartararo, who qualified 10th and narrowly missed out on in 28 thousandths to Maverick Viñales, who will have to go through Q1 once again.
Marquez, unrecognizable
The two Suzukis, Alex Rins (12th) and Joan Mir (16th), the Ducati of Jack Miller, the Yamaha of Franco Morbidelli or the KTM of Brad Binder must also go through the repechage session. And Marc Márquez, who finished 21st on the time sheet (1.46.577) more than 1.1 seconds behind the leader in an absolutely unrecognizable version of the Cervera rider, who in addition to seeing him suffer on the bike, already makes one think that he is beginning to not enjoy racing.
