The good ambient temperatures and the excellent grip of the asphalt of the Sachsenring circuit once again meant that the extra-soft rear tire that Michelin has taken to this Grand Prix this year was a perfect ally for the drivers to lower the already very fast times of Friday, establishing Pecco Bagnaia a new record for the track, closing a lap in 1:19.765, improving the previous day’s mark, 1:20.18, which already meant the new record for the track.
The top five finishers in the session managed to get below 1.20, with Aleix Espargaró setting a 1.19.829 which was a record at the time and which caused the Aprilia driver to get angry, as he ran into Franco Morbidelli in the middle of the track preventing him from improving, even more, that incredible time. Behind Aleix, third, finished Jack Miller, beating Johann Zarco and Jorge Martín, all of them below Friday’s record.
Fifth finished Fabio Quartararo, who was unable to complete the training session as he had a problem with his helmet just over two minutes from the end. The Frenchman turned to see who was following him, with the bad luck that the wind lifted the visor of his protector and unhooked it from the left side, leaving it open and half hanging. Fabio tried to hook the visor, but he couldn’t and went back to the pits to change his helmet in a hurry, going out onto the track with the clock already at 00.00, but just in time to enter the asphalt and rehearse the start.
Behind Joan Mir finished 7th, completing the top 10 Takaaki Nakagami, despite the fact that he fell with 1.5 minutes remaining, Maverick Viñales and Miguel Oliveira. The Portuguese, despite finishing tenth, did not get a direct pass to Q2, as Luca Marini’s best time in FP2 put him directly in the fight for pole position, despite finishing FP3 15th.
They must also go through Q1, among others, Marco Bezzecchi, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Pol Espargaró, Brad Binder or Enea Bastianini.
Alex Rins, who finished with the 17th fastest time, completed 20 laps, so he did the full training and now, depending on how his left wrist injury is, he will assess whether he continues to compete or gets off the bike to prepare facing Assen.
