Bagnaia: "The key is to get to the front at the first corner"

Ducati sporting director Paolo Ciabatti said before qualifying at the Sachsenring that it was important to see many Italian bikes ahead and that he expected distance between Pecco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo on the grid.

In the end, however, the Frenchman, the outstanding leader of the championship, managed to climb up to second position and will start from the front row of the grid, right next to the Italian.

Bagnaia could not do more, who managed to beat the record for the fastest lap twice and, once again, for pole position.

“I’m happy, we’ve done a good job, we’ve made a bit of a mistake with the tires during Q2, first I wanted to fit three, then we decided on two and in the end I couldn’t take advantage of the third tire,” he explained.

Despite being unbeatable in one lap, the key to the race will be consistency over 30 laps.

“We have a good pace, it wasn’t easy because of the heat and the wind, but we’ve had a good FP4 and now we’ve dropped to 19th, which is always nice to see,” said Bagnaia, who set the 1.19.931 to take pole.

Despite that time, the Italian highlighted the difficulties of the session.

“The conditions were very, very difficult and on a circuit like this where you can’t stop doing things for the whole lap, everything is more difficult and the rear wheel gets very hot, it’s difficult to be constant, but the pace is well and I’m happy and ready for the race”, said a confident Pecco who, for the moment, did not want to reveal which tire he will go to the race with. “I don’t know what rubber I will use”, he assured.

Lastly, the Ducati leader is aware that the rival to beat is Quartararo, who in Barcelona, two weeks ago, did not seem to have as much pace and in the end he beat his rivals in 6 seconds.

“It will not be easy to fight against a rider like Fabio, but what I have to do is try to always get there in front of him”, in reference to the first corner, to prevent the Frenchman, as he did in Montmeló, from having a free field and being able to try to escape.
