Since Ducati began to implement increasingly sophisticated aerodynamic solutions, each appearance of a part creates a monumental stir in the MotoGP paddock, where the rest of the manufacturers analyze each innovation of the Italians (Aprilia has also begun to get ahead in this field) to see if it’s worth copying.
The latest genius of the Borgo Panigale wind department was a kind of ‘crests’ that appeared on Friday on the tail of Jorge Martín’s Ducati, who ruled them out immediately, and Enea Bastianini, who gave them a margin of credit. The piece multiplied to perch, on Saturday, on the back of the bikes of Luca Marini and Jack Miller, who despite admitting that “I don’t notice any difference”, took them in qualifying and in the race, managing to start from the front row and finish on the podium.
The one who touched the drawer was also Bastianini. The Italian started eighth on the grid, suffered a touch at the start and sank to 11th position, from where he climbed, in the second half of the race, to fourth place.
“Without the problem at the start, in which I bumped into Marco Bezzecchi and Martín, I would surely have been able to fight for the podium, even to win the race”, said the triple winner (Qatar, Austin and Le Mans) of the Gresini team .
But the curious thing about the case is that after so much spoiler and aerodynamics, Bastianini’s race was completed with only half of the front wings. At the start he lost his left wing and without it he did the whole race. And for a few laps, without even knowing it.
“It was difficult to handle the bike in this situation. On the first lap I didn’t even understand the problem with the wing,” Enea explained at the end of the race.
“I touched Marco [Bezzecchi] and Martín and I saw that something jumped into the air, but I didn’t realize it was a wing. After two laps I understood that the bike had a problem, I was losing it a bit in the corners of left. When I realized it, after three or four laps I regained confidence in the bike and I recovered the sensations. Surely it was more difficult without the wing, but not so much, “acknowledged the Gresini rider.
“Without this problem, I could have fought for the podium and the victory, but you have to keep going to understand what you can do. I really enjoyed this race and we have to continue in this direction.”
