Bastianini: "I feel like one of the leading group"

Enea Bastianini has ceased to be a surprise and has become a reality. He did not have an easy apprenticeship at the beginning of the season, but in recent races he has begun to carve out a niche for himself in MotoGP, with surprising comebacks, not to mention the fact that he is riding the oldest bike on the grid.

The Moto2 world champion achieved his third consecutive top 6 finish in Austin, moving up ten places from his position on the starting grid at the Grand Prix of the Americas. On the last lap he also took advantage of the contact between Joan Mir and Jack Miller to overtake both and take sixth place.

“I’m happy because from Silverstone to here we’ve taken a big step forward,” said Bastianini at the finish. “In each race I feel more and more in the leading group. I think I can always be in the top positions. I didn’t think I was going to finish sixth, because I started from 16th place and on a track like Austin I knew I wouldn’t It was easy to come back, but I did it.”

“On the last lap I waited for them to make a mistake in front of me, because Mir and Miller saw that they were fighting. In the end, they touched at turn 15 and I got into it, so this sixth place came out,” he added.

The next appointment will be again in Misano , where he got his first podium in the premier class a couple of weeks ago. Therefore, it is normal that for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix the bar is even higher.

“The objective is to improve, so do something better than third place. But you have to be realistic, because every weekend is different and the conditions will be different. It will surely be colder. We will see where we are when we return to Misano, but what we’ll try.”

As one of the youngest riders on the grid, with a recent past in Moto3, The Beast was also asked about the terrible crash that occurred in Texas and which caused the Turkish Deniz Öncü to be suspended for two grand prix.

“I would have suspended him until the end of the season. For me, Öncü was very aggressive, but that is his style normally. well that when you’re younger you’re also more reckless.

“With everything that has happened this year, you have to be more careful. For me, it wasn’t right to do a five-lap race either, because we know that people who know they can get to the front do a little bit more to get there. , increasing the risk.

When asked if he thought the situation in Moto3 had worsened, he replied: “When I was racing there were some riders who went a little overboard, but not as much as we have seen in the last two or three years.”
