Bastianini wins the penultimate game against Martín for the official Ducati

In mid-June Paolo Ciabatti, Ducati’s sporting director, announced that the decision on which rider was going to accompany Pecco Bagnaia in the Italian house’s official team in 2023 would be announced at the end of August. Then there were three races left that were understood as three finals between Jorge Martín and Enea Bastianini, the only two candidates for the position.

In the Dutch Grand Prix , the first round was won by Martín, who despite finishing 7th at the finish line, did so four positions ahead of Bastianini (11th).

After the long summer break, the duel has resumed this weekend at Silverstone. Before the race, the Spaniard assured that both the British and Austrian races in fifteen days were “the two most important races of my life”, alluding to how much is at stake and the great interest he has in being the chosen one.

The man from Madrid had a great race this Sunday, starting 9th on the grid, but he quickly climbed to the top positions and came third, ahead of Jack Miller, staying in the top4 until the last lap.

However, Bastianini is a Sunday rider, who grows in the race and, above all, in the final part, in the final laps. The Italian, who started 8th on the grid, went to 11th position, and from there he began to build his career, overtaking all the riders he crossed in front of, one by one, until he reached Martín. He made a first attempt, but the Spaniard returned it and kept the place until the end… almost. On the last lap Bastianini passed Jorge and outscored him by 99 thousandths, winning the penultimate game of the game, which is due to be decided at the Red Bull Ring in two weeks.

“I don’t think anyone at Ducati bases themselves on the result of one race, two or five”, Martín slightly changed his speech after the race.

“In the end, what is valued is the work of a whole year in the box, what is not seen from the outside, I think they will make a good choice, but wherever I am next year I will be happy”, added Martinator, that in addition to two complicated injuries, he has had to spend the whole year testing new parts in the GP22.

For Bastianini, winner of three races this year, but with very uneven results, things have been, on paper, easier by having a GP21 that has worked from day one.

“I didn’t think about the future during the race, I just tried to do my best”, explained the Italian.

“I am happy with the result, Jorge has also had a great race”, he added.

For Enea, who this year rides with Gresini , no matter what happens there will be a change of team, because if he doesn’t go to the official one, he will go up to Pramac.

“I think we are two very fast riders and it will be a nice battle until the end, but above all the fights that we are going to have in the future will be nice”, settled the boy from Rimini.
