The contrast between the Marco Bezzecchi who got on the Ducati, in Jerez, last November, and the one who finished fourth last Sunday in Australia, where he did not want to discuss the podium with Pecco Bagnaia, is enormous.
In these eleven months, the Mooney VR46 rider has experienced a real spin with a team that, like him, also debuted in MotoGP, with the added pressure of carrying the initials of the most influential figure in the history of modern motorcycling: Valentino Rossy.
Both have met with flying colors if we take into account that Bezzecchi was able to cross the finish line second in Assen, and that the team is eighth in the table, ahead of formations such as the two from Honda, the Yamaha satellite (WithU) and also that of KTM (Tech3).
In the absence of two tests to put an end to his debut in the garden of the majors, Bezzecchi is at peace with his progression, the one that, for the moment, places him 14th in the general points table, just behind Marc Márquez, who, yes, has missed eight appointments. In any case, when this 23-year-old from Rimini looks back, he still has a knot in his stomach remembering the anguish he felt in Jerez, when he got on the Desmosedici for the first time, and saw the last one on the time table.
“And so much that I was distressed”, he answers who writes these lines, before going on to detail how he handled that moment, and how he got out of it: “The first time I tried MotoGP I realized how difficult it was. I got to asking myself if I was prepared enough or if I had done the right thing in leaving Moto2. I was last in the time table and that worried me. But I managed to stay calm, and the team never rushed me”.
Landing in MotoGP is something for any rider, and things can get a little more complicated if the team you arrive at is also a rookie. When #72 is asked to assess his learning and compare it to the troop around him, he thinks he loses that pulse. “In our rookie year in MotoGP, the team has gone faster than me. Already in the second or third race they were at a tremendous level, higher than mine,” considers the kid, who has between eyebrows to go back to climb on the drawer before finishing the exercise, something that Luca Marini, his workshop neighbor, still pursues.
In the first half of this 2022, ‘Bez’ was able to add 35 points to his locker, almost half of the 58 he accumulated in the next eight stops on the calendar. Matteo Flamini , one of the most recognizable faces in Valentino Rossi ‘s garage and who now plays the role of technical manager for the newcomer, made a decisive contribution to his adaptation to the Desmosedici.
“I knew Matteo from his experience with Vale, but we didn’t have that much personal treatment. He’s a great guy, we call almost every day. In addition, there is no eventuality that can happen to you on the track that he has not experienced before, at least once. He has worked with many very relevant technical managers, and he has taken the best of all of them and knows how to move. And the best thing about him is that he never thinks he’s the best, he always asks everyone”, emphasizes Bezzecchi.
