The 2022 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix seemed like it was going to be very interesting due to the raindrops that were falling on the asphalt of Suzuka, but as the minutes passed, the intensity grew to the point of not letting the pilots good visibility. However, the FIA decided to continue with the usual starting procedure from the grid, with all cars racing at normal speed.
Despite the fact that in the first corners there were no major incidents other than the touch between Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, upon reaching the second sector, Carlos Sainz lost control of his Ferrari and ended up hitting the protections, bouncing and staying in the middle of the clue. The Spaniard admitted to having been “purely lucky” that no one hit him after his accident, but the stewards went out to recover the car earlier than they should have.
Just when Pierre Gasly was going through that stage, the Frenchman from AlphaTauri encountered a crane in the middle of the track when he was riding at high speed, recalling what happened in 2014, when his compatriot, Jules Bianchi, went wide in a of the curves and suffered a serious blow against one of those vehicles that left his life hanging by a thread on the same stage in Japan.
The young promise of Ferrari, who at that time was driving for Marussia, lost his life months later, in July 2015 , due to the consequences of the accident, something that made Formula 1 change a lot in terms of safety measures, and advanced the introduction of the Virtual Safety Car and the Halo, among other things.
Now, after seeing what happened at Suzuka, Jules Bianchi’s father spoke out on social media about the FIA letting a tow truck into the circuit to remove Sainz’s car, and expressed his anger.
“There is no respect for the life of a pilot. There is no respect for the memory of Jules [Bianchi], incredible,” Philippe wrote on his Instagram account accompanied by a screenshot where Gasly passed a few meters from the extractor vehicle.
He was not the only one who gave his opinion on the incident, since one of the protagonists of the race, Lando Norris, posted a few words on his Twitter account criticizing the international federation: “What the fuck. How did this happen!? “We lost a life in this situation years ago. We risked our lives, especially in conditions like this. We want to race. But this is… Unacceptable.”
