Binotto believes Sainz's mistake on Saturday cost him victory

Since making the decision to penalize Charles Leclerc, it was clear that Ferrari would have to contest the 2022 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix on the defensive. Despite this, at the end of the race there was a certain aroma of bitterness in the team after seeing how Carlos Sainz had brushed victory against Max Verstappen.

The Madrid native, also helped by the appearance of the safety car towards the end of the race after Yuki Tsunoda’s accident, was able to make his second stop to fit new hard tires and came second behind the Dutchman, whom he was unable to overtake.

In this way, Sainz had to settle for second place on the podium, while his teammate, who started from penultimate position on the grid after having mounted a new power unit, managed to climb to fifth place and limit the damage.

Once the race was over, Mattia Binotto spoke to the microphones of Sky Sport F1 Italia: “This weekend has been the most defensive we have been, because we started from behind and we had to minimize the loss of points. In fact, in the end we were able to win some, which shows that reliability is everyone’s problem”.

“It’s a fact, it’s difficult to manage. We know we have problems, but we must be focused to solve them as soon as possible,” he added.

Ferrari team principal explained that the race Charles Leclerc was based on having patience, while justifying his late pit stop and pointing out with gestures the mistakes made by the mechanics.

“We knew that this would be a race of patience for Charles [Leclerc] . He experienced the frustration of someone who is forced to start from behind and at times would like to overtake, but it is not always possible because of the train that is generated by the DRS or tire deterioration. He was patient, he finished fifth and I think overall it’s a good result.”

“We had a little bit of bad luck with Carlos [Sainz] at the time of the VSC, but the safety car came in handy. With Charles I think we did well expected at the time of his stop because at that time Lance Stroll was picking up the pace and we wanted to have room to get out of the pitlane ahead of him.”

“Unfortunately the stop was not a good one. With a normal pit stop we would have come out ahead of that train of drivers and Charles would not have damaged his tires at that stage of the race, so I also think he could have attacked towards the end. We have to review our pit stops because there is something systematically wrong.”

Binotto also analyzed the career of Carlos Sainz . According to the director of the Maranello team, the Spaniard is improving his rapport with the F1-75 , but he acknowledged that in the race he paid for his mistake on the last lap of qualifying.

“Carlos is gaining confidence, he understands the car better and he is driving better than at the beginning of the season. His race pace has been very good and we knew that if he overtook Alonso, he could fight right away.”

“It’s a shame because maybe today we had the pace for a bit more, but that tenth or two is not enough to overtake. Maybe he paid for his mistake in qualifying yesterday and this shows once again that you need perfect weekends to win.” .

“In the race he was fine, he kept the pace and he attacked Max [Verstappen] after the restart. He didn’t push, he stuck to him and waited for the last two laps. Unfortunately he made a small mistake at the hairpin that deprived him of giving the last step, but it was very close. His first victory will come soon”, he concluded.
