Burgundy is a wonderful area of France to stay, with its countryside full of castles, old abbeys and stately homes. These buildings are excellent historic hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation.
Courban Castle and Spa
Set on its own grounds in Courban, a small town that makes a good stop between Troyes in Champagne and Dijon in Burgundy, the beautiful 19th-century castle has a delightfully rural feel. Some of the 22 rooms of different sizes are decorated in a peculiar way; others are cozy with bathrooms cleverly hidden behind old doors. For retirees or families, the annex has interconnected accommodation consisting of a junior suite with a double bed and a room with two single beds. There is an outdoor pool and spa offering a variety of treatments. There is also a well equipped room for the disabled which is unusual in many hotels. The restaurant offers Burgundy cuisine.

Castle of the Vault of Lugny
If you want a true castle hotel experience, complete with huge canopy beds, fires on cold days, a charming kitchen garden provided by the very good restaurant, and wonderful gardens, look no further than this castle hotel, just 15 kilometers (9.5 miles) from Vézelay in a small town.
Reserve Le Roy’s room and you will get two posters and a fireplace in your room. The bathrooms with all the rooms are large and luxurious, while the wood paneling, the wooden floors or warm red tiles and the antique furniture make you feel like the King, Queen or Prince that you undoubtedly were in another life. There is also a swimming pool, beautifully lit and seductively housed in the stone vaults. In winter, dine in the old kitchen, built in 1614 and dominated by a large stone fireplace and a large vaulted ceiling. In summer the terrace is perfect with great views over the extensive gardens.

La Cueillette Hotel Spa Resort
This is a castle with a difference, located next to the vineyards in the town of Meursault. The main reception rooms recall the glory days of its 19th century past when it was rebuilt on the foundations of an old Cistercian abbey dating from the 12th century. But the 19 rooms are thoroughly modern with minimal decor, bold colors, and, of course, great bathrooms.
The spa offers what they call ‘Fruititherapie’, which roughly translates to fruit therapy treatments, based on the antioxidant properties of the red berries of Burgundy. The owner is a physician with a very successful practice, so you are in good hands here. There is a very generous size swimming pool with views of the surrounding countryside and a seating area.
Two restaurants offer gourmet cuisine or a more casual bistro style in the ‘Kitchen Garden bistro’.

Olivier Leflaive’s House
You will discover this charming hotel in the middle of the main square of the small town of Puligny-Montrachet that gives its name to one of the great wines of Burgundy. This is an unusual hotel with 11 rooms and 2 junior suites ranging from conventional to decidedly extravagant. One has a country feel with exposed beams and hardwood floors and a decorative theme inspired by a black and white cow; another is retro from the 50s for the future pop star. Please check the website before booking to get the right room for you. The restaurant is bistro-style and good value for money, and here’s a serious wine list plus a special tasting. Of all the hotels in the area, this is one of the most relaxed.

Abbey of Bussiere
For those who like their hotels in old buildings, this is the place. The old abbey is located in the small village of La Bussière-sur-Orche, on the Burgundy canal. A former Cistercian abbey founded in 1131, the Abbaye de la Bussière stone building complex has it all: an arched front door that separates the abbey from the village, beautiful old buildings including a dovecote, and an 18-acre lawn and garden setting. green forests. Today, the English owners have turned it into a hotel (it is also their family home), with all the comforts of the 21st century and all the romance of the past. It is an easy motorway drive of approximately 45 minutes from Dijon and is a good base for exploring the region.

The Relais Bernard Loiseau
For true luxury in delightfully informal surroundings, choose this hotel in Saulieu. Bernard Loiseau was one of the great chefs and hoteliers of France; His legacy is carried on today by his wife Dominique, and in the kitchens (which truly live up to the ‘legendary’ description), Patrick Bertron continues smoothly. The building was originally from the 18th century and the rooms have delightful decorative touches: warm tile floors, ceilings supported by antique wooden beams, and antique furniture. But the facilities, including a magnificent spa, are completely up to date. As of April 2019, the restaurant has 2 Michelin stars, while the wine list is… well, once again, legendary.
