In principle, and without abandoning elementary hygienic precautions, there is no danger of contagion by contact with the "yellow water" , as the song said.
Even those affected by urinary tract infections such as cystitis can safely continue to have sexual intercourse , since the bacteria that usually cause it – Escherichia coli, Proteus, Klebsiella and enterococci – have other routes of entry.
There is, however, an important exception: "In active urinary tuberculosis, the cause of the disease, Koch's bacillus, is eliminated in the urine," explains Juan Carlos Ramírez Fernández, from the Ruber International Hospital in Madrid. For this reason, it is advisable to disinfect the toilets with bleach or another product after a patient has used them.
