Canet believes that they "discriminate" him for his tattoos

For the past two seasons, Aron Canet wore a wooden bow tie every time he stood on the podium (seven times during that time) or took pole position (three more times), which aroused general curiosity. However, the Valencian driver, every time he was asked about the supplement, he answered the same: “I’ll tell you the day I win a race”.

However, that victory did not come to an end and last Sunday, in Aragón, the HP Pons rider crashed leading alone, something that had already happened to him other times, the most painful in Austin.

Tired of that victory not coming, Canet finally revealed what motivated him to wear that wooden bow tie. “It is a message for some people in the paddock, and outside it, who have branded me this or that without knowing me, for having tattoos, in a discriminatory way. You are not better or worse staff for having tattoos,” Canet revealed to the daily Ace .

The runner, who has a large part of his body tattooed, explained that it all started at Mugello 2021.

“I was negotiating with several teams from different categories and some of them rejected me because I had tattoos,” he says. “And outside the paddock I have also been branded things without knowing me, just because of my image,” he added.

The opinion of the MotoGP riders

This Thursday, in Thailand, some of the main riders on the queen class grid were asked about the Canet case and the possible connotations of discrimination that it entails.

“It’s sad, but it’s reality. It’s like denying racism,” said Aprilia rider Aleix Espargaró. “Racism exists, unfortunately, and nowadays the image is very important. Aron says that he was neither worse nor better boy when he did not have any tattoo, and that is a good reflection, but I am in a factory team in MotoGP , and I know how the managers of large multinationals act. Like it or not, it is something that has an influence, but I support Canet a thousand percent. It already touched my nose when Dorna banned shorts, the stereotypes are there, ” pointed out the one from Granollers.

For his part, Marc Márquez lowered the debate to the sports field and advised Canet to respond to those who discriminate against him with results on the track.

“I have a very clear opinion about it: if you win ten races, don’t worry, no one will notice your bow tie, tattoos or anything, the teams will want to have you. Everything is respectable and the character of each person has to be valued, but this sport is like that and what is most valued are the results on the track”.

At the official press conference prior to the grand prix, the first to face the question was Fabio Quartararo, who was left a bit confused.

“The truth is that I don’t know what to say about it,” he tried to react. “He definitely has a lot of tattoos, I can understand the teams too. I also have a lot of tattoos and I know how it goes for some brands, for which an image without tattoos is important. Some don’t care, but others do.” reported, apparently firsthand, the boy from Nice.

“It’s sad because he is a very strong rider, I hope that if he is ready to go up to MotoGP he will find a team,” added the Yamaha rider.

For Pecco Bagnaia, spearhead of the Ducati project and who experienced a complicated social media campaign after testing positive this summer in Ibiza for excess alcohol, the situation does not correspond to the times we live in.

“It’s quite strange that at this point, in the year 2022, this is an issue. It doesn’t mean anything to have many tattoos. It seems strange to me that a team rejects you for having tattoos,” he added.

Finally, Enea Bastianini, who was the last to respond and had more time to prepare her response, went a bit the same way.

“I am not able to understand this situation. I think Canet is a very fast driver, and I also know that for some factories the image is important, and he is full of tattoos, but he is a great person. We were teammates in 2017 and I know he is a great person,” he insisted.

“This situation is very negative for him and his future, something will have to be done,” said Gresini’s man.
