There are many experts who warn of the exponential increase in stressed drivers in recent years. According to official data, Spaniards spend an average of 51 minutes a day in the car, to travel to work or to take children to school, for example. Well, one of the most common practices in anxious drivers is to honk the horn, although the DGT only allows it to do so in a series of very specific situations , such as warning of a possible accident.
The Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) indicates that article 110 of the General Traffic Regulations establishes that it is forbidden to use “acoustic signals with strident sound” when there is an R-319 signal on the road, except if it is to avoid an accident. RACE also clarifies when the horn can be used and what are the fines contemplated by the DGT, although in practice these types of sanctions are rarely imposed.
Car horn: when can it be used according to the DGT?
According to the General Directorate of Traffic, the use of the horn is only allowed in three situations : to alert of a possible accident, to warn the driver in front that we are going to overtake and emergency situations.
According to article 70, if we are forced to circulate as an emergency service , we have to use the horn intermittently and combine it with the emergency lights.
Failure to comply with current regulations may lead to the following fines: 80 euros for honking the horn without any reason , 80 euros for not respecting the “no acoustic signals” sign and 200 euros for driving as if we were a vehicle authorized to emit acoustic signals without be it or circulate with a non-priority vehicle that has a device that emits special acoustic signals.
Despite the fact that the regulations limit the use of the horn , it is actually a mandatory element according to article 11 of the General Vehicle Regulations: “All motor vehicles, except motor-powered tillers driven on foot, will be equipped with an acoustic signal-producing device. that it emits a continuous, uniform sound of sufficient intensity » .
