Carlos Sainz led the second practice session of the 2022 Formula 1 British Grand Prix and closed the day on Friday with the best time after an FP1 in which it was practically impossible to shoot due to the rain.
Despite the fact that the drivers were able to spend less time than usual on the track, the Ferrari driver from Madrid spoke about his sensations behind the wheel of the F1-75 and acknowledged that, at least for now, they seem competitive, although he also acknowledged that there is room for improvement .
As soon as he got out of his car, Sainz explained how complicated it was to carry out all the work that the team had prepared for Friday in a single practice session.
“The second free practice session has been busy after the lack of activity in FP1. We had to complete an intense program in FP2 in order to study both qualifying and race pace in the best possible way.”
“It was quite a challenging session. The wind made it tricky to get the right balance between the high speed sections and the right compromise for the tires in the low speed turns.”
“Overall we are fast, but we think there is room for improvement,” added the #55.
For the classification that will take place this Saturday at Silverstone, Carlos Sainz is aware that the rain could make an appearance again, so all the laps of FP1, where he was the third driver with the most laps, could be crucial.
“Tomorrow’s qualifying could be interesting due to the weather, so those few wet laps in FP1 were also useful. Let’s see what finally awaits us tomorrow,” concluded the Spanish Scuderia driver.
His teammate, Charles Leclerc, also shared the good feeling: “We couldn’t do much in FP1, but we did a few laps in the rain to have some data in case tomorrow qualifying is wet. Once he stopped rain in FP2, we put on a set of soft tyres, but we couldn’t complete any laps because of the red flag.
“FP2 was a bit more normal and I realized that our performance felt good. I am confident that we will be competitive and it will be a matter of putting everything together,” concluded the Scdueria Ferrari Monegasque.
