Since Casey Stoner retired from motorcycling almost ten years ago, Australia had to wait a long time before they could celebrate another great success in the motorcycling world championship.
Jack Miller won a grand prix in his second MotoGP season (2016), but then went four years without a win before returning in 2021 with two wins. Currently facing his second season with the Ducati factory team, Miller is an icon for Australian motorcycling.
For his part, Remy Gardner is the second Australian entered in MotoGP in 2022. The son of former 500cc world champion Wayne Gardner faces his rookie season in the premier class with the Tech3 team and will represent, together with Miller, the talent from Australia.
When asked about them, Stoner excitedly replied: “Both of them impressed me because they worked hard on themselves and their riding style. There were certainly phases in their careers where they were forced to struggle quite a bit, but they both recognized their respective weaknesses and eliminated them and now they can fight for the title”.
The former Australian driver is impressed by the discipline of Miller and Gardner: “Changing yourself and your mentality is one of the most difficult tasks. It would be much easier to trust your own natural instincts. But both have been thinking a lot about themselves and the way they compete in the world championships. I like that a lot.”
Stoner, two-time MotoGP champion, marked an entire generation and laid the first stones of a path marked by success and during his stay in the world championship he was a rider capable of giving a voice to the talents of the mainland island.
“It’s good to see some Aussies back in front. Unfortunately, it’s been a long time since anything like this has happened. I can only say this is what Australia has been waiting for.”
