A study from University College London, in the United Kingdom, has linked the lack of sleep in young children with a poorer development of their cognitive abilities. The researchers analyzed the nocturnal habits of 12,000 children between 3 and 7 years old and analyzed their reading comprehension, mathematics and their spatial skills.
According to the results obtained, the lack of hours of sleep was related to a greater difficulty in brain development and a worse performance in the day to day. At the gender level, girls subjected to irregular periods of sleep presented a significant worsening in test results that is not observed in boys in the same situation. For their part, men also saw their success in tests reduced, but only half that in the case of the opposite sex.
As has been demonstrated, poor cognitive development during childhood has repercussions throughout adult life, so it is essential to create and maintain good habits during this stage that ensure good health in the future.
