To do this, they collected data from hundreds of these animals over a period of ten years, from 2007 to 2017, and their analyzes led them to detect that the survival rate of the dolphins had been reduced by 12% after the heat wave. 2011. Likewise, female dolphins gave birth to fewer pups, a circumstance that lasted until at least 2017.

 

An unprecedented negative influence

According to one of the authors of the study, Sonja Wild, from the University of Leeds, “the extent of the negative influence of the heat wave” has surprised them. “It is especially unusual that the reproductive success of females has not returned to normal levels even after six years, ” he stresses.

Although there are various explanations for this phenomenon, such as the abandonment of offspring, increased mortality of newborns, delayed sexual maturity or a combination of all , researchers have not yet been able to study them in detail.
