Coffee is one of those products that the more research is done on them, the more beneficial properties for our health are found. Now, a new study carried out by Cornell University in New York (USA) affirms that it also prevents vision impairment and possible blindness due to retinal degeneration .
To reach this resolution, the researchers worked with laboratory mice divided into two groups: the first group received a treatment with chlorogenic acid (the one found in green, unroasted coffee) and the second group received none, as a group. of control. Both groups of mice were exposed to nitric acid which causes oxidative stress and leads to retinal damage. The results showed that the mice treated with chlorogenic acid did not experience retinal damage while the control group did, reaching the same conclusion with coffee extract.
According to experts, apart from the caffeine contained in coffee, green coffee , that is, the natural one that is not roasted, has between 7 and 9% chlorogenic acid , which is nothing but a powerful antioxidant that prevents degeneration. of the retina, at least in the rodent experiment.
" Coffee is the most popular beverage in the world , and we are understanding what benefits we can get from it," said Chang Y. Lee, lead author of the study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry .
