The healthy effects of a good cup of coffee are many: as an antidepressant, to combat bad breath, or in general as a tool to enhance our health. Now, a team of researchers from the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School of the National University of Singapore has found that it can also reduce the risk of death from liver cirrhosis by 66% .
The study focused on the effects of coffee, alcohol, black tea, green tea, and soft drinks as risk factors for mortality from cirrhosis. They analyzed the medical records, lifestyle and diet of more than 63,000 people between the ages of 45 and 74. Follow-up of the participants occurred over a period of 15 years.
After this time, the researchers recorded a total of 14,928 deaths, of which 114 were due to liver cirrhosis . After contrasting the data, they discovered that only coffee decreased this risk and, as expected, alcohol increased the chances of death from this disease.
Coffee has real health benefits and thanks to this work it could be used as a means to minimize deaths from cirrhosis, which according to the World Health Organization (WHO) is responsible for 1.3% of deaths worldwide .
The study has been published in the journal Hepatology and it is recommended to drink two or more cups of coffee every day given its positive effects on the body.
