Cosmetic surgery operations skyrocket

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has released new statistics that reveal recent trends in body shaping procedures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), nearly 18 million people underwent minimally invasive and surgical cosmetic procedures in the United States in 2018 (meaning there were nearly a quarter of a million more procedures in 2018 than in 2017) .

In Spain, the trend is also on the rise. According to
the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE) there are almost 400,000 cosmetic surgery operations carried out in Spain. According to the survey carried out by the SECPRE, the most performed interventions are breast augmentation, liposuction, breast reduction and the intervention that combines breast augmentation and elevation, followed by abdominoplasty and autologous fat fillers .

Before delving into the data, let’s clarify a very common doubt.

What is the difference between plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery focuses on improving the body, while plastic surgery reconstructs parts of the body that have been damaged due to illness, burns, or trauma.

Motivating factors

The authors of a previous study carried out in the United Kingdom analyzed 204 questionnaires to identify the factors that lead people to undergo cosmetic surgery. The questionnaires included questions about self-esteem, life satisfaction, physical attractiveness, religiosity, attitude toward cosmetic surgery, and media consumption.

The researchers wanted to understand what factors influenced the likelihood of opting for cosmetic surgery. They were also interested in determining the factors that affected people’s perceived benefits from undergoing these procedures.

The results showed that religious beliefs and low self-esteem were significant predictors of likelihood, while predictors of perceived benefits included religiosity, media consumption, life satisfaction, and biological sex.

The findings showed that women who rated their self-esteem, life satisfaction, and attractiveness as low, had few religious beliefs, and had high media exposure were more likely to undergo cosmetic surgery.

Although women were generally more attracted to cosmetic surgery, the number of men who considered these procedures was also significant.

The influence of the media

The study also highlighted the powerful effects of media exposure and religiosity. People who were more exposed to the media believed cosmetic surgery brought more benefits, while religious people were more likely to perceive cosmetic surgery as in direct contrast to their beliefs.

What are the most demanded cosmetic surgery procedures?

The ASPS reported that the top five procedures in 2018 were:

-Breast augmentation
-Liposuction
-Nose remodeling
-Eyelid surgery
-Tummy tuck / flat abdomen

While breast augmentation and liposuction increased by 4% and 5%, respectively, as of 2017, there was a slight decrease in facial procedures.

The number of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures also increased in 2018 . The three most popular procedures were botulinum toxin type A (Botox), soft tissue fillers, and chemical peels, which increased by 3, 2, and 1 percent, respectively, as of 2017.

Focused on the body

The data shows that three of the top five surgical procedures in 2018 were centered on the body. The number of liposuction procedures increased by more than 12,000, while surgeons performed more than 13,000 additional breast augmentations.

The slight reduction in the number of people having the most popular facial procedures is likely due to the availability of alternative options, such as non-surgical nose reshaping and improved eyelid swelling . Additionally, it is now possible for surgeons to perform specialized procedures for different areas of the face and neck without doing a full facelift.

Surgery in Spain

“I think that in our current Spanish society, and from my own experience, the last decade has taken a giant step forward in plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine, where the first factor or reason for consultation refers to body or facial dissatisfaction as the main reason and the feelings of unattractiveness with a diagnosis of low self-esteem are the main protagonists; this has been increased by social media; in my opinion values have been lost more and more on a personal level and are being replaced by increasing the importance of having a good physique to be approved by society and by themselves; although only a small percentage is completely satisfied; since the tendency is to always go for more; and to improve what can be improved according to who … “, explains Mery Lamah, specialist in Medicine Aesthetics with private practice in Zaragoza and member of TopDoctors.

The role of attractiveness in Spanish society is fundamental today, continues the expert who did not participate in the study, who comments that “The main surgeries or treatments most in demand are: breast surgery; liposculpture, botulinum toxin for lips and facelift “.
