COVID treatment is 40% more expensive for men than women

COVID-19 treatment for policyholders in Mexico can cost men 41.5% more than women.

The Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS) announced this Thursday that until February 15, the average cost paid by insurers for COVID-19 treatments in men is 496,000 pesos while in women the cost is of 290,000 pesos per case.

“Men have required more hospitalization in intensive care, intubation and that is why a very large increase is seen. The vulnerability between men compared to women is evident because men present greater frequency and greater severity ”, said Edgar Karam, vice president of AMIS.

Insurers have compensated a total of 26,630 people: 18,268 men and 8,362 women.

To explain this situation, the government has specified that men are more likely to suffer from the disease and the AMIS figures confirm the trend.

Until February 15, the money paid by insurers for COVID-19 has already reached 1,153 million dollars, ranking as the fourth most expensive accident for the industry, behind Hurricane Odile (2014), the earthquake of 19 September 2017 and Hurricane Wilma (2005).

It is estimated that by the end of March, the COVID-19 pandemic will be disputed between the first and second place as the most expensive loss for insurers.

The Association said that so far it does not have reports of companies that have been affected in the northern part of the country that have faced frosts and lack of electricity supply.

“The impact on Mexican industry has been due to the lack of gas or electricity supply. It would be necessary to see the particular case. At this time, at the AMIS level, we have no information regarding any damages or compensation for these damages, “said Edgar Karam.
