Elephant shrews (macroscelidea) are similar to mice. However, it is scientifically proven that its closest relative are elephants. These tiny mammals are from Africa and are distributed throughout the continent, except for the Sahara and the western part. In addition, there are 19 different species that belong to the same family (macroscelididae).
Shrews feed on insects, so they tend to eat mainly ants, worms, termites, and beetles. However, larger species can hunt small vertebrates and feed on mollusks, such as snails. They can also eat (although not as commonly) fruits, seeds, and vegetables.
Regarding its reproduction, the female usually gives birth to one or two young. In addition, the gestation of the elephant shrew usually lasts between six and ten weeks. Thus, when conditions are favorable, they can have between three and four litters per year.
On the other hand, these animals measure between 10 and 30 centimeters and their weight varies between 25 and 300 grams. Likewise, their fur on the back can vary depending on the habitat . It has large, round eyes as well as an elongated trunk-shaped snout.
Here are the best pictures of elephant shrews. Without a doubt, they are the most surprising animals.
