A young woman gives birth to a child unnoticed in the bathroom at Christmas. Hours later, a baby’s body is found in the trash. The investigators are convinced: the mother killed the girl.
Regensburg – The young woman who sits in the dock in front of the regional court in Regensburg on Monday morning appears composed and calm.
The prosecutor accuses her of murder. The 25-year-old secretly gave birth to a girl on Christmas Day 2020 and – according to the conviction of the prosecutor – is said to have killed her out of “blatant selfishness”. At the start of the trial, the mother is silent. Witnesses report that the defendant behaved unexpectedly without emotion immediately after the crime.
The girl’s body was found in a dumpster. The investigators tried to reconstruct what happened before. Accordingly, the 25-year-old, who had worked as a geriatric nurse, recently lived with a couple of friends. In the bathroom, she gave birth to the baby alone while the couple were out for a walk. The later autopsy of the body revealed that the child was viable and died a non-natural death.
The woman is said to have cut off his air supply. She is said to have put the unconscious or dead baby together with the bloody towels in a plastic bag and put it in another bag along with residual waste. She put the bag in a dumpster in front of the house. The child suffocated or died of hypothermia.
A police officer said in court that the couple, with whom the 25-year-old lived, called at the time and told them about the lifeless baby. They noticed the blood in the bathroom after the walk. Initially, the 25-year-old claimed that her menstruation was unusually heavy. When asked, she said she had a stillbirth. The woman had previously noticed changes in the figure of the 25-year-old. When asked whether she was pregnant, she said no.
Another friend who was visiting over Christmas then took the 25-year-old to the hospital by car. The witness says she was amazed at the woman’s calm behavior. It was “cold and emotionless” and, moreover, “kasweiß”. The answer to the question, is she in pain? “Everything is ok” and “I didn’t want a child anymore anyway.”
According to her own statement, the witness did not know anything about the pregnancy. On Christmas Eve they celebrated together that alcohol had flowed. Beer and schnapps. The defendant drank “quite a lot”. When the witness relates this, the defendant shakes her head. It is one of the few external impulses that she shows in court.
The 25-year-old was brought directly from the hospital to the police. One officer recalls the interrogation in court in which the defendant stated that the baby was lifeless and that she tried to flush it down the toilet. The woman was very calm during the conversation. “It was very strange.”
According to the prosecutor, the woman – a German citizen – acted out of base motives. You didn’t want to appear as a liar because of the hidden pregnancy.
