Devil May Cry, the return of the demon hunter

After more than a decade without seeing Dante, Nero, Trish and Lady (sorry Ninja Theory, many of us still do not see that reboot with good eyes) we received the fifth installment of the saga more than happy to find a continuation at the height of Those expected after a while doubting if the expectations of this DMC5 would be fulfilled, and we can assure that Dante has not disappointed us. As it has been so long since the last installment of the saga, many people may have forgotten the events of the previous games and from here we propose to help you refresh the story. We will focus on the latest official chronology (DMC 3, DMC, DMC 2, DMC 4 and DMC 5) that moves the position in the history of Devil May Cry 2, although it does not really change the plot much as the story of this installment is something a bit isolated from the rest of the games.

Before starting to tell the whole story, we must give some general touches to some of the most important details of the saga , such as saying that Dante is the son of Sparda, an ancient demon who stopped the invasion of the kingdom of humans by Mundus, the lord of the demon realm. After this Sparda stayed on earth and fell in love with a woman, Eva, with whom he had two children, Dante and Vergil. Shortly after this Sparda died and Dante and Vergil each inherited half of an amulet that is the key to reopen the portal between the two kingdoms and also obtain Sparda’s demonic powers.

After this quick look at the history of Sparda we begin with Devil May Cry 3, in which a young Dante opens his still-nameless demon hunter business receiving a visit from a strange man named Arkham, to deliver a curious message in the form of an attack by various demons of his brother Vergil, whom Dante considered dead. After easily defeating them, Dante watches as a gigantic tower rises from the ground and feels the
presence of his brother at the top of it, taking this whole show as a challenge that Vergil puts in front of him.

During his ascent of the Dante tower he meets Lady, a woman who explains that she is looking for her father, Arkham, the same man who is helping Vergil, to get revenge on him for killing his mother. After continuing his climb up the tower and defeating an army of enemies and final bosses, Dante finally reaches the top, where Vergil awaits him to snatch his half of the pendant after a fight in which our antihero does not come out very well. .

After trying to open the portal with the newly combined medallion, Vergil realizes that something is wrong, because he cannot make the tower mechanism work and things get worse, as Dante recovers quickly and with the help of Lady he launches again to fight him, at which point Arkham reveals himself as the orchestrator of the whole plot, because he really wanted to get the two parts of the medallion for himself and obtain the powers of Sparda.
After managing to open the portal, Arkham goes to the kingdom of demons, where Dante will find him already transformed into a demon with the powers and sword of Sparda, but will have an unexpected ally to defeat him, Vergil. Together, the two brothers will manage to defeat him and return him to the kingdom of humans, where it will be his daughter Lady who ends up with her father.

After taking the common enemy out of the way, the two brothers face each other again, now to see who gets Sparda’s sword, this time Dante being the one who wins his brother, who will fall into the world of demons. Once there, he will try to gain control over that kingdom by standing up to Mundus himself , but again his plan will be twisted and after his defeat he will be turned into Nelo Angelo to serve Mundus forever.

We finished with DMC 3 and went directly to the first installment that we could enjoy on PS2, Devil May Cry (curious detail, it began as a prototype for a Resident Evil installment) The game begins again with Dante in his business office, already baptized as Devil May Cry, where after a brief presentation a woman named Trish throws a motorcycle at Dante to test his skills and see if he is capable of facing the Mundus himself, who is planning to invade the human world without the need for a tower or amulets . Dante does not hesitate long to accept the job, especially since the mysterious woman reminds him in everything of his late mother.

Upon reaching the island of Mallet, Dante will meet a mysterious enemy, Nelo Angelo, whom he will defeat after a hard fight to discover that it was his brother Vergil transformed into a servant of Mundus. When disappearing in an explosion, he drops the half of the medallion that would already appear in DMC 3 and that Dante now uses to unleash the full power of Sparda’s sword by joining it with his half.

With all the power of his father Dante continues to advance towards Mundus, but in a new encounter with Trish this leads him into a trap to confess afterwards that he had been working with Mundus from the beginning. In a little twist of the story the thing goes awry for her and a giant rock almost crushes her, being saved by Dante simply because she looks like her mother.

The story continues and Dante finally reaches Mundus and after receiving a small beating from the demon lord and when everything seems to be about to end for our hero, he is saved by Trish by standing between him and a lightning bolt launched by Mundus. This sacrifice considerably affects Dante’s bad character and manages to unleash all the power of his father, obtaining the necessary strength to stand up to Mundus, end him and be able to return to the kingdom of humans with a Trish that it seemed we were going to lose to forever.

We close another chapter of the saga and we arrive at Devil May Cry 2, the most controversial of the saga as it is widely criticized for being the worst by far. In this episode of the story, a woman named Lucia asks Dante for help in defeating a businessman named Arius, who uses demonic powers to try to take over the world and wants to summon a demon named Argosax. Our heroes will each face an enemy separately, Lucia to Arius and Dante to Argosax, and after advancing in the story and with a little original twist we discover that Lucia is a creation of Arius. After confronting him, Lucía asks Dante to kill her to avoid turning into a demon, being interrupted by an energy beam that will open the portal that joins the two worlds again in history. Dante will launch without much thought to close it from within and once achieved, instead of returning to the kingdom of humans, he will continue to delve into the kingdom of demons, to later return to his office, where Lucia awaits him.

With DMC 2 crossed out of the list we are going to what was until now the last installment of the saga, Devil May Cry 4. The story begins with Nero, son of Vergil, serving the Order of the Sword, a kind of religious cult who has Sparda as a deity and who is dedicated to ending demons wherever they are. In the middle of one of the group’s ceremonies, Dante makes an appearance, assassinating the group’s leader, Sanctus, and then destroying a large part of those present at the ceremony. Nero, witnesses everything and launches to face Dante but does not manage to do much against our favorite demon hunter. After finishing the fight, Dante tells him that not everything is what it seems and shows him how the supposed humans he had killed now have the appearance of demons and with a Nero still confused by everything, he manages to escape easily.

Receiving vague explanations by one of the commanders of the Nero order, he receives the mission to hunt down Dante, while the rest of the cult practice a ritual called Ascension on their dead leader, which will turn him into a demon. As the story progresses, Nero discovers that the organization is a fraud and after a hard fight with the order’s alchemist, Agnus, he gets his father’s sword. How could it be otherwise, things get complicated and the recently resurrected Sanctus captures him with the intention of using his powers as a descendant of Sparda to summon a demon named Salvador. Dante and Trish appear on the scene and help Nero, who ends up locked inside Salvador with Sanctus while the demon hunter uses Vergil’s sword to close the portal that had been opened to the demon realm. With the situation almost under control, Nero manages with the help of his father’s sword to put an end to Sanctus and the demon Salvador, ending the story of DMC4.

And with this we complete the mission of briefly summarizing the history of Devil May Cry, although the Lore extends beyond the games. We have movies and novels that we recommend from here that you read and watch, as they add details to the story that will always make us know our favorite antihero and demon hunter better.
