Dinkelsbühl, Germany: Travel Guide to the Romantic Village Road

Dinkelsbühl is located in the Wörnitz Valley of Bavaria, about halfway down the Romantic Road, south of Rothenburg. Dinkelsbühl is located east of the A7 motorway, 230 km from Frankfurt, 235 km from Munich and 100 km from Nuremberg.

Dinkelsbuhl has 11,600 people within its borders. Its moderate size makes it easy to get to and get around. You can drive your car into the old town to unload your bags, but you may have to park outside the gates if your hotel does not have parking.

Purchases

Dinkelsbühl has many shops and artist studios to occupy the buyer. Shops to look for: Greifen (arts and crafts), Töpferei am Tor (handmade pottery), Kunststuben Appelberg (art), and Holzschnitzerei Buckl (wood carving and nativity figures). If you like pottery, you can stay at a hotel associated with the local pottery maker, Dinkelsbühler Keramik.

Where to stay

If you are in a car exploring along the Romantic Road and want to stay out of town, the highly rated Hotel Klozbücher Das Landhotel has a restaurant and parking. Attractions Ellwangen Abbey and Ellwangen Castle are nearby. Baumeisterhaus gets high marks for service, location, and atmosphere.

There is a great selection of reasonably priced downtown apartments listed by Homeaway, many of them highly rated.

Dinkelsbühl Top Attractions

A walk through Dinkelsbühl at dusk is a pleasure. Dinkelsbühl is much less touristy than Rothenburg, despite the many restaurants and hotels, and almost any street will lead you past evocative half-timbered houses and shops. A walk outside the intact walls is also interesting: take the path marked ‘Alte Promenade’.

  • Dinkelsbühl’s old town is one of the best on the romantic road.
  • Saintgeogskirche (Church of St. George) , a late Gothic church on the Marktplatz. See the “pretzel window” donated by the Baker’s Guild. Climb the Romanesque tower (which remains from a previous church) to enjoy views of Dinkelsbühl.
  • Spitalanlage (former hospital complex) now includes the historical museum, concert hall and art gallery.
  • Stadtmühle , a large military fortified mill that now houses the Museum of the 3rd Dimension, hands-on exhibits with fascinating three-dimensional effects.

Dinkelsbuhl also sponsors Sunday concerts in Town Park from May to September, often with youth bands abroad. Live jazz can be heard at the Jazzkeller.

The old grain market, built in 1508 and originally used as a grain storage barn, is now the youth hostel.
