Discovery Green Park

Discovery Green is one of the best parks in Houston. It’s fun, family oriented, and best of all, free. Throughout the year, they offer numerous free activities, including exercise classes, concerts, holiday-themed celebrations, and more. In winter, Discovery Green’s one-acre lake is transformed into an ice skating rink. Please continue reading this FAQ page to help you plan your trip to Discovery Green.

When was Discovery Green opened?

Discovery Green officially opened on April 13, 2008. The site had previously been high-end 19th century residences and later a series of parking lots. Construction of the park helped turn a concrete slab into a beautiful green space in the heart of downtown Houston.

In total, Discovery Green is nearly 12 acres in size and includes a small lake, performance spaces, and of course lots of green grass and trees.

Where is it located?

Discovery Green is located at 1500 McKinney Street in downtown Houston, within walking distance of the Toyota Center, the George R. Brown Convention Center, and the Hilton Americas Hotel.

What are the hours of operation?

Discovery Green is open daily from 6 am to 11 pm, although hours may vary for special events. Before heading to the park, check their website to confirm their hours.

Are there bathrooms at Discovery Green?

Yes, the restrooms are located in the Alkek Building, near the center of the park, as well as near the Fondren Foundation Performance Space on the other side of the park, next to the Avenida de las Américas parking entrance.

Am I allowed to bring my own food?

Although they sell food at Discovery Green (from burgers and hot dogs to signature meals), you can bring your own food. You can also bring your own ice chests and lawn chairs. Glass bottles or containers are not allowed. Neither do alcoholic beverages.

Dogs allowed?

Yes. The park is equipped with two dog tracks: the Kinder Large Dog Run for dogs over 15 inches and the Joe Foster Small Dog Run for those under 15 inches. Owners must pick up after their dogs, and there is a 45-minute time limit on dog races, as well as a number of other restrictions.
