Disneyland saluted 60 years with its diamond celebration

In 2015, the Disneyland Resort hosted a year-long diamond celebration that greeted 60 years of magic. Three new electrifying shows will premiere, adding to the lineup of family fun and attractions every day.

The celebration began on May 22, 2015 and ended on September 5, 2016.

As part of the celebration, the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland and the Carthay Circle Theater at Disney California Adventure each received their own diamond medallion with the letter “D”. The Disneyland Resort and surrounding streets were decorated with Diamond Celebration decorations and festive banners in shades of Disneyland blue. In addition, there were special Diamond Celebration food and meal items to complement the celebration.

Since opening on July 17, 1955, the Disneyland Resort has grown from a single park to a world-class family destination with two highly popular theme parks, three hotels, and the shopping, dining and entertainment district known as Downtown Disney.

The original Disney theme park

When Walt Disney opened Disneyland on July 17, 1955, it had 18 attractions, no Disney hotels, and very little except the surrounding orange trees. Today, the original theme park has expanded to become a world-class family resort destination with two Disney parks, nearly 100 attractions, three hotels, and the shopping, dining, and entertainment district known as Downtown Disney.

The popularity of Disneyland is a testament to Walt Disney’s dream of a place where family members of all ages can have fun together in a safe and clean environment that emphasizes imagination and excellent guest service. Since 1955, dignitaries, heads of state, celebrities and more than 700 million guests have passed through the doors of a place that Walt envisioned as “a source of joy and inspiration to the world.”

Disneyland transformed the amusement industry with a whole new concept in family entertainment: a “theme park” where rides, shows and characters become part of a total storytelling environment. In the nearly six decades since its opening, the Disneyland Resort has delivered on Walt’s promise that “Disneyland will never be completed … as long as there is imagination in the world.”
