(PREVIEW) Daniil Medvedev will be number one in the world starting next Monday after defeating Novak Djokovic this Thursday, in the quarterfinals of the Dubai tournament. The Serbian lost in two sets (6-4 and 7-6) against the Czech tennis player, Jiri Vesely , number 123 in the ATP ranking, and says goodbye to both the tournament and the number one in the world.
The Russian faces Japan's Nishioka tonight in Acapulco, but he will take to the court knowing that whatever he does on Monday he will be at the top of the ATP rankings. Medvedev thus ends the hegemony of the big 4 (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray) who had led the ranking since 2004. In the last 18 years, one of those four had always been at the top of the ranking.
