Dormouses that live in temperate climates go through long periods of hibernation lasting six months or more. How do they spend their hibernation? They generally “make” their nests simply on the forest floor , hidden among logs and piles of dry leaves. Although they may wake up during a particularly long sleep to have a snack, these animals generally try to eat enough to last their entire hibernation . They can lose half their body weight during the winter, which is why they eat so much in late summer that they become twice their normal size. And it is that they can lose up to half of their body weight during hibernation. They can go into hibernation for up to 11 months.
And they are not the only animals that hibernate. So do bats, turtles, rabbits, marmots, snakes, some insects, hedgehogs, snails, squirrels, lemurs, or bears.
