Do your feet go to sleep frequently? Be careful because, according to the Illustrious Official College of Podiatrists of the Valencian Community (ICOPCV), this could be a sign that something is wrong with your body. Behind this annoying sensation there could be problems of vascular, neurological or mechanical origin .
“Having this sensation in the lower limbs is not normal,” says the president of the Valencian podiatrists, Pilar Nieto. The expert recommends that, if it happens to us, we go to a podiatrist as soon as possible to find out the cause.
According to Nieto, the frequent sensation of numbness in the feet can be caused by circulatory problems related to venous return, hypertension, arteriosclerosis and microcirculation problems due to the cold . Also various drugs or alterations in peripheral nerves can cause this discomfort.
Regarding the causes of neurological origin, the experts point out that the alteration of the nervous signal can also be produced by pathologies such as diabetes , alcoholism and smoking, since they reduce nerve conduction and can cause our feet to fall asleep or make us tingle.
Maite García, vice president of the Official College, has added that paresthesia, that tingling sensation, can be caused by the use of bad footwear, by deformities in the foot and by repetitive gait habits , since they generate a constant pressure on a specific area of the foot.
Podiatrists conclude that we must avoid the consumption of alcohol and tobacco at all costs, as well as control any disease that we have been diagnosed with. In the same way, we must choose a shoe that adapts to our feet, that allows full movement of these and that does not squeeze us. The sole should cushion your footing.
Along with this, it is essential that a podiatrist perform a neurological and vascular footprint study, mainly, to assess the situation and offer the most appropriate treatment in each specific case, the ICOPCV has concluded.
