Oral piercings are in fashion but they are not harmless. According to a study recently carried out at the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid, 72% of people who have mouth piercings have suffered some complication after their placement .
The most common is inflammation (35%), followed by pain (18%), difficulty speaking and chewing (15%), dysgeusia (taste disturbance) (5%), bleeding (4%) , hypersialia (increased salivation), infection and paresthesia or tingling sensation (2%) and allergy (1%).
The injury that most worries dentists is the periodontal injury, which occurs in almost half of all piercings (48.1%) . These injuries increase in subjects who wear metal piercing and headgear placement.
