Andrea Dovizioso will play a full season with Yamaha, this time at RNF Racing, a team renamed after Petronas left the championship. After his sabbatical year, the Forli rider had to give his best to adapt to a MotoGP again, a prototype that requires a lot of technique and physicality on the bike.
The winner of 15 MotoGP races and three times runner-up in the world has been very open about his problems in the process of adapting his riding style to the Yamaha, especially after having ridden very different prototypes for Ducati for eight years (between 2013 and 2020).
“I’m getting better, I feel much better,” he confessed to Autosport. “These three days [in Indonesia] have been really much better than Malaysia, we tried the fairing, we tried different things and everything was a little bit better in some areas, not yet in others.”
“I think the work we did was interesting, we tried everything we had to try and tried to improve as much as possible.”
During the final 2022 pre-season test in Indonesia, Dovizioso was 19th overall one second off the best pace.
And while he feels he has made progress when it comes to braking – going so far as to say he is “better” than 2021 world champion Fabio Quartararo in this area – Dovizioso admits the bike is “still not 100%” delivered with your driving style.
“When it comes to braking I feel much better. Right now, I’m even better than Fabio and Fabio is braking very well.”
“It makes me very happy to adapt to a new way of braking, and this is positive, but I am losing too much in other areas,” he concluded.
