It is clear that drinking a glass of wine a day results in better health; however, recent research conducted by the University of Eastern Finland (Finland) has found that drinking alcohol more than twice a week increases the risk of death from stroke, especially in men .
The results of the study, which have been published in the journal Acta Neurologica Scandinavica , show that the effects of alcohol are not limited to the amount consumed, but also to the frequency in which it is produced .
The study was based on the follow-up of 2,609 middle-aged men over a 20-year period . To measure alcohol consumption, the results of a survey were used that asked about the amount of alcohol consumed and the number of times they had drunk alcohol in the last 12 months. These data were compared with the Finnish national registry of cerebral infarction cases.
The final exam found that people who consume alcohol more than twice a week are three times more likely to die from stroke, regardless of how much alcohol they had consumed during the week. However, the higher the alcohol consumption, the more the risk of brain hemorrhage increases . Moderate alcohol consumption had the lowest risk of stroke but did not eliminate it.
