Is “vaping” better than smoking? Do electronic cigarettes prevent the most harmful consequences of smoking? The blazing fashion of these devices, which vaporize a liquid with nicotine through a heat source, is multiplying studies on its effects.
The last one, which has been echoed by the journal Nature , warns that those who vape nicotine fail to quit smoking in a significantly higher percentage than those who use other methods.
The scientists at the University of California asked 949 people to fill out questionnaires detailing their relationship with nicotine for a year. Well, the 88 e-cigarette users included in the survey failed to quit traditional tobacco –or reduce their consumption– more than the rest.
However, according to some specialists, the study simply shows that those who switched to vaping suffered from a very high level of addiction , and continue to consider the e-cigarette to be a healthier alternative.
In Spain, the controversy has been fueled after the news spread a few days ago that a person was admitted to the Hospital Complex of La Coruña with pneumonia from consuming electronic cigarettes. It is the first case in our country and the second in the world.
