Before a historic opportunity of this caliber, Maverick Viñales, who came to Noale’s formation at the insistence of Aleix last year, in the middle of the season, after leaving Yamaha in a bad way, has taken the initiative and has agreed to join the cause of the team, even above their sporting interests.
Once again, and it is not the first, both drivers went out on the track together and gave each other the chance to improve their times and ‘undress’ their lines on a track where both are doing well, but perhaps a little better Maverick, who won at Silverstone in 2016, when precisely both were partners in Suzuki .
“I had a very good feeling with the race tyre. There are many fast riders, and that favors Aprilia a lot”, Aleix assessed at the end of a day in which he was the fifth best on the time sheet.
“Maverick is super humble, very willing to help me,” he said of his teammate, who finished with the third fastest time.
“It’s too early to think about Maverick helping me on Sunday (in the race). But helping me on Friday and Saturday is already a lot. There are a couple of corners that he does much faster than me,” admitted Aleix.
While Maverick offers to help Aprilia and Aleix, Fabio Quartararo is more alone than one, with the rest of the Yamaha riders drifting.
“If Maverick was in front of Aleix, I don’t think he would let it go now,” the Frenchman tried to dismantle the fairy tale of Italian boxing.
Espargaró’s response was as obvious as it was sharp.
“For sure Maverick helps me a lot more than the second Yamaha rider Fabio.”
Friends for years, long-time neighbors in Andorra and teammates at Suzuki and now at Aprilia, the relationship between Aleix and Mack goes beyond racing.
“I know Maverick very well and it doesn’t surprise me. I did a lot of things for him when he was screwed and now he’s giving it back to me,” Aleix said gratefully.
